State Legislation to Ban Pallets: There are a number of bills springing up around the country that propose to eliminate the use of wood pallets in the food industry. In many more states (and the U.S. government and a federal agency) there are proposals to ban the chemical fire retardant used by the leading plastic pallet pooling company iGPS. The food industry has relied on and had confidence in wood pallets for more than 60 years and they were right to do so since laboratory tests and well-documented research have demonstrated wood pallets are the cleanest, safest platform. So why then have lawmakers in different states suddenly introduced such similar bills? Was their a food safety incident? Of course not. We believe it has nothing to do with food safety, but rather an aggressive lobbying campaign by alternative material interests who have persuaded well-meaning but uninformed legislators to introduce these bills. Read more
