NWPCA is a consultant to our members on business and industry issues; we identify ways members can make money and save money. We are advocates for our members with federal legislators and regulators who impact the ways in which our members operate and do business.
NWPCA began as the National Wooden Pallet Manufacturers Association (NWPMA) in 1947 as a part-time trade association with 18 charter members who made up one of 12 divisions of the National Wooden Box Association in Washington. NWPMA became a full-time trade association in 1954 and 12 years later merged with the National Wooden Box Association to become the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA).
Today, the NWPCA is the largest organization of wood packaging professionals in the world. Located in Alexandria, Va., NWPCA is an international trade association with more than 600 company members in 28 countries who manufacture, repair and distribute pallets, containers and reels, or who supply products and services to the industry.
There are more than 1.2 billion pallets in service in the United States each day. They are collected, sorted, repaired and returned to service by the largest pallet pool in the world. That pool is comprised of more than 5,000 independently-owned and operated white wood pallet companies across the country. These companies reuse pallets that are structurally sound, repair damaged pallets to a recognized standard, and resell them to pallet users. Not only is this practice environmentally favorable, but it also assures a steady stream of used pallets into the supply chain which helps contain overall product costs.
When pallets can no longer be repaired to a standard that will assure protection of the goods being shipped and safety of workers handling the load, they are recycled into new products. Those products include landscape mulch, animal bedding, commercial biomass fuel and wood stove pellets. The nails from ground pallet chips are removed through a variety of collection technologies and sold as scrap metal to be used again.
